Guilty or Innocent?

Hey my Friend What’s the Matter? is a net piece by Pino Boresta. The project combines established art strategies, such as documentation of a past event (photo stills), performance (the actual act that was photographed), and user interactivity (visitors to the site being invited to contribute an opinion).

The photo stills, of a person who is about to jump off a building, look like documentation of a performance as well as evidence for a criminal case; the effectiveness of the piece relies on a fine balance between the two possibilities — the latter being the rhetorical platform upon which the art piece was developed. Il dramma di un suicida che si tuffa nel vuoto, il dramma di un testimone che nell’incertezza del momento lo osserva, lo fotografa e lo lascia morire, il dramma di una giuria che deve emettere il verdetto finale:
colpevole o innocente? Il lavoro di Pino Boresta offre all’utente quest’ultimo ruolo, s comodo come gli altri perch=E8 come gli altri impone una scelta, costringe a macchiarsi di una nuova colpa: l’assoluzione di un colpevole, la condanna di un innocente. Scelta difficile, che spinge molti a cercare una via d’uscita, che poi lo stesso crimine che sono invitati a giudicare: l’omissione di soccorso, il rifiuto di un giudizio che, anche se negativo, darebbe sollievo ad un angosciante ed irrisolto senso di colpa.
