stot is pleased to present 2 videos by Los Angeles-based artist Euan Macdonald as the first of our series of artist projects. 3 Trucks (left image) and Hammock Sleep (right image), both from 2001, epitomize the work of Macdonald. In 3 Trucks, Macdonald orchestrates an uneasy but hilarious moment by bringing together three ice-cream trucks at a three way stop; all billowing out their own distorted but happy tunes in the ultimate ice-cream stand-off. Hammock Sleep delivers a like moment, when a gentle relaxing swing shifts into an absurd orbit.
Born in 1965 in Edinburgh, Scotland, Macdonald grew up in the UK before moving to Canada at the age of 14. Studies in Canada include the Alberta College of Art (1984) and the Ontario College of Art (1985-88). He has exhibited internationally in various spaces including the Robert Birch Gallery, (Toronto, 2003), Museum für Neue Kunst ZKM (Karlsruhe, 2002), Fruitmarket Gallery (Scotland, 2002), and SFMOMA (San Francisco, 2001). Upcoming exhibitions include two groups shows in Berlin and Frankfurt as well as a solo show at Galerie Zink and Gegner (Munich, 2003).
To view the videos, you must have QuickTime 6 installed on your computer, along with speakers or headphones for the audio. If needed, click here to download QuickTime 6 for free, then proceed by clicking on the images above. 3 Trucks is 4.6 MB in size, Hammock Sleep is 4.1 MB (download times will vary depending on your connection speed). Playback will begin automatically, however – you may experience a slight stutter in viewing the video as your computer downloads it. Our advice is to allow for a complete download and then play the works from start to finish.
