The narrative possibilities of the A-Z are subtly teased out in Catalogue, an alphabetical trawl through a swathe of rather provocatively named London streets, from Axe to Zion Roads, via Eureka Street, Mayday Gardens and Rotten Row. A single mobile, silent POV shot down each of the predominantly non-descript suburban streets is accompanied by subtitled fragments of story, notes from lives of mundane desperation, emotional cul-de-sacs or characters on the cusp of change. Filmed throughout 26 London locations, Catalogue extends desperate optimists’ interest in urban spaces and the relationships people have to such spaces through emotions, memory, dreams and social situations.
desperate optimists are Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor. One of Britain¹s most respected and innovative mixed-media companies, desperate optimists make works for a variety of media and contexts including the internet, video and film.
Catalogue was made with financial support from London Arts.
