In cooperation with the University of Plymouth, England, the Macromedia University of Applied Sciences, Media and Communication, Munich, will host the international design and research conference Consciousness Reframed of the Planetary Collegium now in its 10th incarnation.
The Consciousness Reframed conference series was founded by Roy Ascott at the University of Wales in 1997. Consciousness Reframed is a forum for transdisciplinary inquiry into art, science, technology, design and consciousness, drawing upon the expertise and insights of artists, designers, architects, performers, musicians, writers, scientists, and scholars, usually from at least 20 countries. From November 19th to November 21st, 2009, international known scientists from Media Theory and Media Design, entrepreneurs and creators will get together in Munich.
This year’s slogan ‚ Experiencing design, Behaving media’ is a wide and open forum for unusual and innovative positions and perspectives.
At the opening event we will present: Prof. Derrick de Kerkhove (McLuhan
Chair; University of Toronto), Jens Monsees (Industry Head, Google Germany) as well as the artist and theorist Roy Ascott.
Derrick de Kerckhove, Director of the McLuhan Program in Culture & Technology since 1983, is a Full Professor in the Department of French at the University of Toronto. He received his Ph.D. in French Language and Literature from the University of Toronto in 1975 and a Doctorat du 3e cycle in the Sociology of Art from the University of Tours (France) in 1979. Member of the Club of Rome, scholar at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, and author of numerous books. Derrick de Kerckhove is a frequent intercontinental traveller and himself a living example of the hybrid nature of media culture. He is a supervisor for the Planetary Collegium's M-Node in Milan, Italy.
Jens Monsees, Google Germany; Industry Head; Consumer Goods & Health Care. He studied Business Administration in Kiel and Rotterdam specializing on International Brand Management and Innovation Management. He is located in Munich and Hamburg developing for Google Germany the on-line-marketing presence of multinational companies in the Health Care and FMCG market. Before joining Google he developed as International Innovation Manager for the BMW Group the BMW-web.tv Platform (web page of the year in Germany). From 2003 until 2006 he was responsible for the Global Communication Strategy of MINI at the BMW Group in Munich. This function included the Launch Manager of the MINI Cabrio role.
Roy Ascott is the Founding President of the Planetary Collegium, Full Professor of Technoetic Arts at the University of Plymouth, Visiting Professor in Design|Media Arts at UCLA, and Honorary Professor of Thames Valley University, London. He created the Consciousness Reframed annual conferences in 1997. Formerly: Full Professor (HS. Prof.), Head of the Chair of Communication Theory, University of Applied Arts, Vienna; Vice-President, San Francisco Art Institute, California. His Exhibitions include: Venice Biennale (International Commissioner), Ars Electronica, Biennale de Mercosul, Brazil, European Media Festival. Ascott has advised new media centres in Europe, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Japan, Korea and the USA, CEC and UNESCO. His publications are translated in many languages. Ascott is also the editor of Technoetic Arts and member of the advisory board of Leonardo. At the Conference we will discuss the following themes:

- The World as Wide Web: following codes to access knowledge-lands
- Design Fever: Cities, Media, Networks
- Locative art, pervasive technologies, Web 2.0, online and physical public space, networked participation in urban policies.
- Media Architecture, Spatial Experience, Design Methodology, Participatory Design Research
Two Panels with the following themes will take place:
1. After social media – what’s the next big thing?
2. Design within the web 2.0 environment
The event is directed to Media Experts, Media Artists, Media Designers, but also to technology experts and students who deal in their research innovation with the creation of new media. Everyone who deals with motivation and creation of new media is warmly invited to the event.
