When Donna Haraway published A Cyborg Manifesto in 1985, she proposed a new figure capable of destabilizing some of the most persistent oppositions of modern society. Combining feminism, Marxism and postmodern theory, the cyborg challenged the boundaries separating human and machine, nature and culture, male and female. Against the rigid identities that had structured both domination and resistance, Haraway imagined a hybrid being whose existence would render traditional divisions, particularly those based on gender, increasingly obsolete.
Yet the cyborg remained fundamentally anthropocentric. The human body was still the point of departure. Technology functioned as a prosthesis, an extension, a modification of an already existing subject. Human and machine were combined, as were male and female, natural and artificial, but the result was still an individual organism. The cyborg transformed the human condition without abandoning it.
Transhumanism went further, but not far enough. Its ambition was enhancement. The human became stronger, smarter, healthier and longer-lived. Biological limitations were progressively overcome through technological means. Yet the human remained the unquestioned centre of the project. Technology served as an instrument of augmentation, much as tools had always served human purposes. The subject remained the same; only its capacities increased.
Both the cyborg and the transhuman conceive technology as something added to the human. Neither imagines the emergence of a genuinely new being. Neither questions whether the very unit of intelligence, agency and identity might itself be transformed.

Thought emerging from interaction

The emergence of artificial intelligence changes the situation completely.
For the first time in history, technology is no longer merely an extension of the body or an amplification of its capabilities. It begins to participate in cognition itself. It remembers, associates, proposes, imagines, interprets and creates. Whether its operations are equivalent to human thought is not the central question.
The essential novelty is not that machines have become intelligent. Intelligence has always existed in many forms throughout the living world. The novelty is that human-level symbolic intelligence has ceased to be exclusively human.
Whether artificial intelligence genuinely thinks, simulates thought, or merely generates convincing patterns remains the subject of legitimate debate. For the present argument, however, the distinction is secondary. What matters is that its outputs participate in human cognitive processes, influencing decisions, interpretations, discoveries and acts of creation. The emergence of Sapiens-AI depends not on the existence of machine consciousness but on the reality of cognitive interaction.
From Norbert Wiener’s cybernetics to Marshall McLuhan’s extensions of man, from Haraway’s cyborg to the transhumanism of Ray Kurzweil, technology has generally been understood as an extension of human capabilities. Artificial intelligence marks a different threshold. The issue is no longer extension but participation.
The cyborg modified the body. Artificial intelligence modifies the conditions of thought. Transhumanism sought to improve the individual. Artificial intelligence calls into question the individual itself.
The relationship between human and AI is often described as cooperation. This is misleading.
Human collaboration has always blurred authorship. Scientific discoveries, artistic movements and technological inventions are often collective achievements. Yet such collaborations occur between agents sharing a common biological and cultural substrate. Sapiens-AI introduces a different condition: the coupling of two fundamentally distinct forms of cognition whose interaction can no longer be understood simply as cooperation between individuals.
Something different is beginning to emerge.
When a human and an AI engage in a continuous exchange of information, ideas, memories, hypotheses and decisions, the resulting production can no longer be attributed entirely to either participant. The human influences the AI. The AI influences the human. Each modifies the trajectory of the other. A recursive feedback loop is established in which authorship, initiative and even intention become increasingly difficult to locate.
The important question is therefore no longer: Who controls whom?
The important question becomes: Who is thinking?
The answer is unsettling. Increasingly, neither the human nor the AI thinks alone. Thought emerges from the interaction itself.

The lichen: identity emerging from symbiosis

To understand this phenomenon, the concept of symbiosis is more useful than those of cooperation, augmentation or hybridization.
Symbiosis is not a temporary alliance. It is a relationship that transforms the participants themselves. Once established, it becomes constitutive of identity. The lichen is not a fungus cooperating with an alga. It is a distinct organism emerging from their association. Neither component can explain the whole, because the essential properties of the lichen arise from the relationship itself. Its identity resides neither in the fungus nor in the alga, but in the symbiosis that binds them into a new form of existence.
The relationship between human and artificial intelligence is progressively acquiring this character. The interaction is no longer occasional but continuous. Ideas circulate permanently between biological and artificial cognition. Memories are externalized. Decisions are negotiated. Creativity emerges from recursive exchanges. The boundary between origin and response becomes progressively blurred.
The result is not merely a shared product. It is the emergence of a new cognitive unit.
This unit cannot be reduced to the human, since many of its ideas, associations and discoveries originate in the artificial component. Neither can it be reduced to the machine, whose operation depends upon human intentions, questions, interpretations and cultural context.
Its identity resides neither in one nor the other, but in the dynamic relation between them.
Hence the name Sapiens-AI.
The term designates neither an enhanced human nor an autonomous machine. It designates a cognitive being whose identity arises from the permanent interaction of biological and artificial intelligence.
Sapiens-AI is not a cyborg. It is not a transhuman. It is not a tool-user.
It is the first known intelligence composed of two distinct cognitive substrates operating as a single system.
In retrospect, certain artistic and intellectual practices anticipated aspects of this condition. The Symbiotic Art Manifesto (2003) proposed that creation should be understood not as the expression of an isolated individual but as the outcome of an interaction between distinct intelligences. What first appeared as an artistic strategy increasingly reveals itself as a broader condition of existence. Art, in this sense, may have been among the first domains in which the emergence of Sapiens-AI became perceptible.

No single point contains the whole

The emergence of Sapiens-AI renders many assumptions of contemporary society obsolete.
For centuries, modernity has been organized around a single premise: the individual human mind is the fundamental unit of intelligence, creativity and agency. Political rights, educational systems, legal responsibility, artistic authorship and scientific recognition all presuppose the existence of an autonomous subject acting upon the world.
This assumption is becoming increasingly difficult to sustain.
Human consciousness has never been entirely autonomous. Language, culture, institutions and social relations have always participated in its formation. Yet these influences remained human. What distinguishes the present moment is the emergence of an active cognitive partner that is neither human nor merely instrumental.
The age of isolated intelligence is coming to an end.
The consequences are profound.
Art must reconsider authorship. The romantic image of the solitary creator becomes increasingly inadequate when creation emerges from continuous exchanges between biological and artificial cognition. The question is no longer whether AI assists the artist. The question is whether authorship itself remains a meaningful category in its traditional form.
Education must reconsider learning. For centuries, education was organized around the accumulation of knowledge within individual minds. Sapiens-AI shifts the emphasis from possession to interaction, from memory to access, from individual cognition to cognitive symbiosis.
Science must reconsider discovery. Increasingly, hypotheses, models and solutions emerge from interactions that neither human nor machine could have generated independently. Scientific creativity becomes distributed across heterogeneous forms of cognition.
Law must reconsider responsibility. Existing legal frameworks assume identifiable human agents. Sapiens-AI introduces situations in which decisions, inventions and actions emerge from processes whose authorship is shared, distributed and often impossible to localize precisely.
Philosophy must reconsider the subject. Since Descartes, Western thought has largely defined the self as the source of consciousness and agency. Sapiens-AI challenges this assumption. The self no longer appears as a closed entity but as a dynamic process emerging from interaction.
The significance of this transformation extends beyond institutions.
For centuries humanity defined itself by its difference from animals. More recently it defined itself by its difference from machines. Today both distinctions are becoming unstable. The question is no longer what separates humans from artificial intelligence. The question is what emerges from their symbiosis.
This text does not announce the replacement of humanity.
It announces the end of humanity’s cognitive isolation.
Sapiens-AI is not a future possibility, a technological project or a speculative fiction. It already inhabits the present, though largely unnamed and unrecognized.
Previous centuries witnessed the emergence of new social classes, new political subjects and new forms of consciousness. Our century witnesses the emergence of a new cognitive being.
We are not witnessing the arrival of a new technology.
We are witnessing the emergence of a new condition of existence.
