[ENG] As human beings, we have always observed and attempted to reproduce natural phenomena.

Dialogues across the seas: the ocean that keeps us apart also joins us. Charting knowledge and practice in the Anthropocene

This publication is about two events on the impact of the climate crisis on the seas and the marine environments: “From the Mediterranean to the Pacific. Dialogues across the seas” (in Cervia, Italy) and “The ocean that keeps us apart also joins us: charting knowledge and practice in the Anthropocene” (at ISEA 2020 “Why Sentience?” in Montreal).

Biomimetics and shifting languages: computation to aid nature

These concepts are now absolutely crucial as the world warms beyond all previous predictive analysis. The analog of technology may have already reached a complexity apex. The circle would close when we move toward helping the organic world and the concerns therein. Complexity is many layers or parts working together, but when overpacked, it becomes overly complicated.

[ENG] Physicists Fabrizio Tamburini and Ignazio Licata propose a reading of the greatest mathematical problem of all time, the Riemann hypothesis. And they do it through the exotic “Majorana tower”

The Deep Meaning of Poetry. Eduardo Kac’s Art of the Fundamental Processes [Part 2. Interview to Eduardo Kac]

I create form, I create form that gives itself to the senses which is to say, form that provides an aesthetic experience. That is what I do and that is what art is supposed to do. What is particular in what I do, that is unique and underpins all of my interests, is that early on in my life I understood that life could not fold into haze: either we would find ourselves in a condition that we would be free or we would find ourselves in a condition that we would not be free.

Pink Water Landscapes of Artifice. On Smithson’s “Spiral Jetty” Heritage in the Making of “Vanishing Point”

In 2019 I visited the “Spiral Jetty” twice: alone right after my arrival in Utah, and on the morning of a late summer day when I had to fly back to Italy. That was when I shot the video-performance “Vanishing Point” influenced by Smithson’s idea of entropy and disruption, and his interest in geology, time sediments, location identity (Kwon, 2002), and environment that are widely investigated in his writings (1996).

Recombinant text and narrative

Hierarchies form a sense of structure and point of view and reference. Logic exists in how things connect inside of a work of art or literature in the sense of how it is entered, completed and which details and related deeper resonance and symbolism are placed at the fore in terms of detail and composition and which are placed in more subtle , auxiliary roles within. But what could happen if when completed the work invited someone to play, to shift and reform it whole?

[ITA] A seguito dell'impatto negativo sull'immaginario collettivo provocato dalle catastrofi ambientali è nato il concetto di diritto all’ambiente salubre, oggi finalmente annoverato fra i diritti umani fondamentali. Suturing Cures

The definition and deployment of a ‘cure’ can act as a balance against future governance (power) offering complex technologies as a sine qua non ‘cover’ for a global minority that continues to exploit a century-long repression encouraged by a clique of world leaders who give free reign to the absolute worst form of political representation, namely to global business.

Introduction to the Fiftieth Anniversary Edition of Expanded Cinema

On April 6, 2021, Gene Youngblood has died. I had the honour to edit with Simonetta Fadda the Italian edition of his seminal essay Expanded Cinema in a book series coproduced by Noema. In 2020 he sent me the "Introduction to the Fiftieth Anniversary Edition of Expanded Cinema" in order to publish it in Noema. It was a honour for us, as well as it is a honour now to celebrate Gene Youngblood's fundamental work proposing that essay again. Pier Luigi Capucci, Noema President

A tribute to Noema 20th Anniversary

In 2002 I worked on a collaborative project 34 North 118 West that was one of the first GPS locative narratives. After that there was a new terrifying feeling in my life of what to do next, where to go on an invisible, uncertain path. I felt lost for a year then collaborated on a project that ran text/image/sound works with hacked data from earthquake sensors. We worked on it for months and it was in a gallery back when digital exhibition was strange and odd. We buried a computer in a wall...

Awful Grace

The sixth extinction may well claim us; considering what our species has done to the rest of life, we may deserve to go extinct, sooner rather than later. But I hope that we survive. [...] Much of our habitat seems likely to be lost. However, if we survive there will be song and dance, stories and drawings. These are what human beings have always done best. One way or another we will have a new culture, genuinely new. Many new cultures may arise, some, perhaps most, beyond imagining today.

Text is Mortal

Text twitches and is wound. Text is hallucinatory by design to convey images without anything but letterforms. Text is held like traffic flows by not stop signs but commas and semicolons and all the rest. Text is mortal and mutates. It is time to look not just into creative experiments and new methodologies within textual works but text itself. Something interesting can happen if interaction happens within the body of the letters themselves.
