On April 6, 2021, Gene Youngblood has died. I had the honour to edit with Simonetta Fadda the Italian edition of his seminal essay Expanded Cinema in a book series coproduced by Noema. In 2020 he sent me the "Introduction to the Fiftieth Anniversary Edition of Expanded Cinema" in order to publish it in Noema. It was a honour for us, as well as it is a honour now to celebrate Gene Youngblood's fundamental work proposing that essay again. Pier Luigi Capucci, Noema President

In scholarship the Anthropocene has been tied up with the experience of the unthinkable by thinkers including Timothy Morton, Donna Haraway, and Amitav Ghosh. Yet, the current COVID-19 pandemic—which as a crisis also exemplifies the human impact on and a reshaping of environments—challenges the pervasiveness of the key concepts of abstraction and unthinkability. Instead, the pandemic has turned the Anthropocene into a concrete, intensely lived, globally shared experience.
In 2019 I visited the “Spiral Jetty” twice: alone right after my arrival in Utah, and on the morning of a late summer day when I had to fly back to Italy. That was when I shot the video-performance “Vanishing Point” influenced by Smithson’s idea of entropy and disruption, and his interest in geology, time sediments, location identity (Kwon, 2002), and environment that are widely investigated in his writings (1996).
Recent events across the world of academia have brought into full light the various agendas around online education and research. As universities, schools and colleges closed across the world in 2020, researchers, teachers and students scrambled to adapt to a whole host of new pedagogical tools, communicative techniques, learning methods and teaching styles almost overnight. Some survived, others thrived, while some struggled and ultimately went ‘out of business’.
These developments in AI pose a significant threat to many design professionals who will be replaced by artificial intelligence that will make human labour redundant. However, the integration of AI systems into the design process also provides new opportunities: collaboration with AI systems allows for design on a level of complexity and scale that human cognition cannot encompass. Therefore, based on the recognition of the creative capabilities of the machine, the challenge for designers today ...
Now we are allowed not only to enter animals’ and plants’ environments and behaviors more in depth, but also to steal from them the secret of their ‘technologies’ which explain their survival power. This research culminates in the field “biomimicry” and the construction of hybrids which may give birth to new species of animals and plants,
The Anthropocene imposes a reflection about the time span of the human species and cultures in contrast to that of the individuals, requires a vision extended to a remote future that should be governed knowing that people will not be part of it. This implies a cognitive leap, a different consideration of humanity and its relationship with the “non human” and the environment, intended as a complex dynamic intercourse, towards a further level of awareness in a new pact with the existing. In the An...
Since 1993, this conference series brings together artists, scientists, designers, educators, and researchers to more deeply understand how people engage individually and socially in creative processes and how computation and other technology can affect creative outcomes.
Hierarchies form a sense of structure and point of view and reference. Logic exists in how things connect inside of a work of art or literature in the sense of how it is entered, completed and which details and related deeper resonance and symbolism are placed at the fore in terms of detail and composition and which are placed in more subtle , auxiliary roles within. But what could happen if when completed the work invited someone to play, to shift and reform it whole?
In a state of ontological crisis, all boundaries between human and machine, nature and culture, and the organic and inorganic have been severely blurred. These are times of curious contrivances, novel natures, inescapable automation, and posthuman performances – where human and nonhuman find themselves being entwined, meshed and muddled into new unwitting entanglements.

Performing [with] machines. The dual meaning of this title hints towards an understanding of the machine as a performing agent in a human-machine partnership. By putting the emphasis on creative human-machine partnerships in performative contexts, this theme aims to encourage artistic and scientific contributions that deal with the different ways in which musicianship, authorship and performership are challenged, extended and redefined in the era of AI.
The definition and deployment of a ‘cure’ can act as a balance against future governance (power) offering complex technologies as a sine qua non ‘cover’ for a global minority that continues to exploit a century-long repression encouraged by a clique of world leaders who give free reign to the absolute worst form of political representation, namely to global business.
xCoAx is an exploration of the intersection where computational tools and media meet art and culture, in the form of a multi-disciplinary enquiry on aesthetics, computation, communication and the elusive X factor that connects them all. The focus of xCoAx is on the unpredictable overlaps between the freedom of creativity and the rules of algorithms, between human nature and machine technology, with the aim to evolve towards new directions in aesthetics.
Eduardo Kac has raised many nodal questions on the transformations of society and culture, in a constant creative relationship with the technology and the science of his time. In his research communication, intended as mutual information exchange is a fundamental topic. This makes Kac a perfect interpreter of the resources and contradictions of the contemporary, with a strong vision on how the present time can possibly develop and evolve into the future.
